Reformer Pilates for Beginners: What to Expect

Reformer Pilates for Beginners: What to Expect

Thinking about trying Reformer Pilates but not sure what you're walking into? You're not alone. Reformer Pilates for beginners can look intimidating from the outside, with its sliding carriage, straps and springs, but it is one of the most welcoming, adaptable ways to build strength and move well. This guide walks you through exactly what to expect in your first class, what to wear, and how to get started at our studio in Derby.

What is Reformer Pilates?

Reformer Pilates is a full-body, low-impact workout performed on a machine called a reformer. It uses a sliding carriage and adjustable springs to add resistance and support, guiding you through controlled, precise movements that build strength, mobility and control. If you want the full picture, we cover it in more depth on our Reformer Pilates page.

Is Reformer Pilates good for beginners?

Absolutely. One of the best things about the reformer is how easily each exercise can be made gentler or more challenging simply by adjusting the springs. That means a genuine beginner and a seasoned mover can do the same class side by side, each working at the right level for their body. At Innate Studios we run dedicated Beginner and Gentle classes designed specifically for people who are new to Pilates or returning after a break, so you are guided clearly through every movement.

What to expect in your first reformer class

Your instructor will show you the reformer, explain how the springs and straps work, and check whether you have any injuries or areas to be mindful of. Classes are kept small, so you get real attention rather than being lost in a crowd. You will move through a sequence of controlled exercises focused on breath, core activation and alignment. It is completely normal to discover muscles you did not know you had the next day. Nothing is rushed, and there is no ego in the room, just a calm space to learn.

What to wear and bring

Wear comfortable, fitted clothing you can move freely in, and avoid anything too loose as it can catch in the reformer. Grip socks are essential for stability and hygiene. If you do not own a pair, we have some available to buy in the studio. Beyond that, just bring yourself and some water. All equipment is provided and we take care of setup and cleaning.

  • Fitted, comfortable clothing
  • Grip socks (available to buy in studio)
  • A water bottle

How often should a beginner do Reformer Pilates?

Consistency matters more than intensity. Many people feel a difference after just a few sessions, but coming one to three times a week is ideal for building strength, body awareness and lasting change. Start where you can commit comfortably and build from there.
